While democracy has proven to be a fragile and elusive form of politics in the modern Arab world, Islamist movements have flourished--ranging from grass-roots pro-democracy activism to militant jihadism and terrorism. Whether Arab politics witnesses more political liberalization in the near future will depend in large part on the nature of Islamist movements, as well as ruling regimes' reactions to them. This article examines the broad range of Islamist alternatives within one of the more liberalizing Arab states--the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan--with a view to understanding the depth and breadth of Islamist forms of political mobilization.

Although there is a substantial deference between Fatah and Hamas about the basic strategy toward Israel, there is no difference as to the interpretation of the "right of return". Both parties declared several times in public that the "right of return" means that all the refugees from 1948 or their descendants should return to their homes in their villages and be compensated for the suffering they endured in the last 60 years.

Day of Reckoning for Gaza?
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert returned to Israel from the US this morning and, echoing the previous day's remarks by Defense Minister Ehud Barak, said that Gaza's day of reckoning is approaching.
"Israel is closer to the day of reckoning regarding the Gaza issue," said the prime minister at Ben Gurion Airport. On Thursday, Olmert had said that Israel was inching toward using military force against Hamas in Gaza because Egyptian cease-fire efforts there were not "ripening."

Ephraim Asculai and Emily B.Landau
On May 26, 2008 the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) circulated a technical and factual report on Iran, devoid almost entirely of political overtones. The IAEA report gives prominence to the major issue of the day Iran's unrelenting progress in its uranium enrichment program but also highlights an additional serious issue of concern:
Iran's secret weapons development activities. The unprecedented level of concern included in the report reflects and furthers tendencies that first emerged last February, when new material was handed over to the IAEA regarding Iran's involvement in weaponization studies.

The NEFA Foundation has obtained and translated a copy of an audio recording of Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri released by Al-Qaidas official As-Sahab Media Wing on June 4, titled On the Anniversary of the Disaster A Call to Help Our People in Gaza. During the recording, al-Zawahiri once again called upon the sons of the Islamic nation [to] break the chains of the treacherous regimes and the impotent authorities [surrounding Israel] and set forth to join the battle and aid the mujahideen.

The Emergence of the 'Infallible Jihad Fighter' The Salafi Jihadists' Quest for Religious Legitimacy
Abstract
In recent years, the Salafi movement has seen the emergence of a new conception of, and basis for, religious authority. In the past, religious authority within this movement stemmed primarily from the scholarly credentials and reputation of the individual.

The NEFA Foundation has obtained and translated two new statements from an emerging Sunni insurgent faction calling itself the Iraqi Martyrs Brigades. In its initial statement of purpose, the IMB indicated that its fighters were being guided both by Muslim Shariah law and contemporary laws
Our clerics have previously agreed that fighting the enemies who are attacking Muslim countriesby any means necessaryis a duty in and of itself. International contemporary laws maintain the same view as well. Defending yourself against an oppressor is merely common sense for the popular masses.
