As most people, I too received a copy of Mr. Estes' letter that voices his opinion on our current administration. Though, unlike many, I was skeptical. I've been sent dozens of emails that are said to have been written by either a current military soldier, or political figure, and almost all have turned out to be fake. While the message they convey is usually one of morailty, honor, Integrity, and states a clear ,precise view of American politics, they are usually written by someone else, other than the stated author.
Which is why I was skeptical about Mr. Estes letter right from the start. So I read it, and definately thought whoever wrote it knew what they were talking about. It had to have been written by someone who's been paying close attention to politics and current events, surly not a 95 year old man! When I come across letters like this, I like to see if I can find out where they originated from, usually a university student or professor. A quick google search led to an "urban myths" website, so I figured it was a fake, just like I expected it to be. I checked the website to see who brought this letter to the masses, and saw a banner stating "author confirmed". Did I read that right? This WAS written by someone from the greatest generation, and really WAS sent to the president? Right then I felt a tingle down my back and could only find one reason for my goosebumps, pride. It's been one year, three weeks, and four days since I last felt pride for my country.
When I first read the letter, I wanted nothing more than it to be true, but I wasn't getting my hopes up. Finding out it was, showed me that even a difference of 65 years in age, doesn't mean we view things differently. It states a hard and inevitable truth, American pride spans throughout every generation. Time has no influence over what is good and what people perceive as proper.
Our nation was built by great men, but flawed men. They were wise enough to know they didn't know everything, so left us with a skeleton key that can open any door of opression, corruption, and malfeasance that they couldn't forsee. Given to all citizens, it gives us a voice over what we deem to be corrupt, and the ability to fix it. Written by flawed men, it has stood the test of time for one reason, it works. We have the oldest constitution in existance in the enitre world today, but we need to let people know what it stands for, and the price that has been paid for it, more than a million times over.
Mr. Estes, I have never served in our military, I've never put my life on the line to defend the freedoms you, and so many from your generation fought to protect. But I believe that we have to honor the many men and women who have sacrificed their lives, by cherishing the freedoms they allowed us to keep. Your letter is a great example of how we should speak out against any injustices we find in those who hold the future of our country in their hands. Our president needs to know we aren't going to stand by while he insults our great nation and makes us look weak. I grew up in a country that didnt take orders from any foreign country or leader. The country I grew up in made it clear to the world that we stand for freedom, ashore and abroad, and we will fight any threat that attempts to deny it.
We are now on the cusp of losing all the things that made this country the most powerfull nation on earth. People like you , Mr. Estes, who still hold these beliefs, are the exact defination of a patriot. Your words have traveled across the country and are being heard by millions. People must remember it is our DUTY to question our leaders, and make them aware of their responsibilities.
Mr. President, hear our voice, we won't stand for any more of the anti-American rhetoric you are spreading. People from every generation will always have at least one thing in common, we're all Americans. We all have pride in our country and speaking out against America is speaking out against all Americans.
It's been 6 days since Mr. Estes wrote his letter to you Mr. President and there's only one logical reason it's reached soo many people in such a short time, he's 100% right, and 100% American. How about yourself Mr. President? - Jason William

Coming from a 95 year old sailor:

Subject: WW II Battleship sailor tells Obama to shape up or ship out!

This venerable and much honored WW II vet is well known in Hawaii for his seventy-plus years of service to patriotic organizations and causes all over the country. A humble man without a political bone in his body, he has never spoken out before about a government official, until now. He dictated this letter to a friend, signed it and mailed it to the president.

Dear President Obama,

My name is Harold Estes, approaching 95 on December 13 of this year. People meeting me for the first time don't believe my age because I remain wrinkle free and pretty much mentally alert. I enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1934 and served proudly before, during and after WW II retiring as a Master Chief Bos'n Mate. Now I live in a "rest home" located on the western end of Pearl Harbor allowing me to keep alive the memories of 23 years of service to my country.

One of the benefits of my age, perhaps the only one, is to speak my mind, blunt and direct even to the head man.

So here goes.

I am amazed, angry and determined not to see my country die before I do but you seem hell bent not to grant me that wish.

I can't figure out what country you are the president of. You fly around the world telling our friends and enemies despicable lies like:
"We're no longer a Christian nation" ·
"America is arrogant" - (Your wife even announced to the world," America is mean-spirited. " Please tell her to try preaching that nonsense to 23 generations of our war dead buried all over the globe who died for no other reason than to free a whole lot of strangers from tyranny and hopelessness.)

I'd say shame on the both of you but I don't think you like America nor do I see an ounce of gratefulness in anything you do for the obvious gifts this country has given you. To be without shame or gratefulness is a dangerous thing for a man sitting in the White House.

After 9/11 you said," America hasn't lived up to her ideals." Which ones did you mean?

1. Was it the notion of personal liberty that 11,000 farmers and shopkeepers died for to win independence from the British?
2. Or maybe the ideal that no man should be a slave to another man that 500,000 men died for in the Civil War? 1 I hope you didn't mean the ideal 470,000 fathers, brothers, husbands, and a lot of fellas I knew personally died for in WWII, because we felt real strongly about not letting any nation push us around because we stand for freedom.
4. I don't think you mean the ideal that says equality is better than discrimination. You know the one that a whole lot of white people understood when they helped to get you elected.

Take a little advice from a very old geezer, young man. Shape up and start acting like an American. If you don't, I'll do what I can to see you get shipped out of that fancy rental on Pennsylvania Avenue .You were elected to lead not to bow, apologize and kiss the hands of murderers and corrupt leaders who still treat their people like slaves. And just who do you think you are telling the American people not to jump to conclusions and condemn that Muslim major who killed 13 of his fellow soldiers and wounded dozens more. You mean you don't want us to do what you did when that white cop used force to subdue that black college professor in Massachusetts who was putting up a fight? You don't mind offending the police calling them stupid but you don't want us to offend Muslim fanatics by calling them what they are, terrorists.

One more thing. I realize you never served in the military and never had to defend your country with your life but you're the Commander-in-Chief now, son. Do your job. When your battle-hardened field General asks you for 40,000 more troops to complete the mission, give them to him. But if you're not in this fight to win, then get out. The life of one American soldier is not worth the best political strategy you're thinking of. You could be our greatest president because you face the greatest challenge ever presented to any president. You're not going to restore American greatness by bringing back our bloated economy. That's not our greatest threat. Losing the heart and soul of who we are as Americans is our big fight now. And I sure as hell don't want to think my president is the enemy in this final battle.

Sincerely,
Harold B. Estes

When a 95 year old hero of the "the Greatest Generation" stands up and speaks out like this, I think we owe it to him to send his words to as many Americans as we can. Please pass it on.

The right wing has grown ever more spiteful since Obama made office. It is curious to watch GOP supporters leap like emaciated hyenas to chew on useless scraps like this. "Obama's cabinet is full of terrorists," - "Obama plans to destroy america with socialism," - the only thing I haven't heard yet is, "can't trust that Barack, with him having been born in mars and all."

Wouldn't you call any book of prayer a HOLY book? regardless of faith? So the fact that neither you nor I understand the transcriptions of the Koran detracts from its value as being holy?

The propaganda I've seen being produced from upset conservative Americans has displayed a depth of sore losing I had not yet witnessed in the history of sportsmanship. - JamesJnameth
