Because the answer to this question determines whether you are living in a free nation which is ruled by its citizens, or a tyranny ruled over by the few or the one.

Most Americans know that Thomas Jefferson was the principal author of "The Declaration of Independence", the most important of all our founding documents.

Yet few of them have even heard of another document that I would say might be the second most important declaration he ever wrote: The Kentucky Resolutions of 1798. He drafted them secretly while he was serving as vice president. It was written in response to the hated Alien and Sedition Acts which were passed under the Adams administration during an undeclared war with France.

Both my Father and older brother were Certified Public Accountants. Around the dinner table, the Internal Revenue Services was spoken of as the adversary. "Tax time" which used to mean a March 15 deadline was preceded by a period of long working hours. Over the years the tax laws became so arcane and dense they defy comprehension.

The income tax is probably the worst thing that ever happened to the United States in the last century because it was always punitive and regressive. It punishes saving.  It deters economic growth through investment. It takes the wage earner's money before he or she receives their paycheck.
