The Obama administration investigation of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's immigration enforcement program is starting to look a little futile. A federal source revealed today that more than 40 percent of the 500-plus arrests made in Sheriff Joe's crime suppression operations were in fact "serious" criminals of the kind Janet Napolitano claims to want help from local law enforcement agencies in identifying. This is actually a higher proportion of "serious" offenders than in many other 287(g) jurisdictions. So why has Sheriff Joe been singled out?
DHS spokesman Matt Chandler was quoted in Wednesday's Politico as follows: "[DHS] decided to terminate the Task Force Model in Maricopa County because the agency believes Maricopa County Sheriff's Office sweeps do not align with ICE priorities to arrest, detain and remove serious criminal aliens .... The success of the Task Force model relies on cooperation and coordination with local law-enforcement partners. MCSO has been unwilling to coordinate with local jurisdictions while continuing to flaunt a disregard for [DHS] priorities."

Possible record cocaine load seized
A load of cocaine estimated at 10,000 kilos (22,000 pounds) was seized from a "mini-sub" some 180 nautical miles from Guatemala on the Pacific Ocean. An unidentified Coast Guard vessel and aircraft intercepted the mini-sub; later, Guatemalan navy and DEA agents made the seizure. Three Colombians and one Mexican were found aboard the craft and were arrested. The submersible was headed to Guatemala and the ultimate destination of the load was said to be the United States. The craft was being taken to Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala, and was said to be of the type built by the Colombian FARC guerillas and narcos.

El Heraldo (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) 10/20/09
The world's most violent region
Drug traffic, organized crime and gangs are the principal factors which make Central America the most violent region of the world. This is especially true of the "North Triangle": Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras. According to the 2009-2010 Central American Human Development report of the U.N.'s Development Program, the underlying causes are the "social maladjustments" of family disintegration, a large number of marginalized youths, a lack of a better future, disordered urban areas, an abundance of drugs, firearms and liquor, and a culture of violence.
Last year, Honduras had a rate of 58 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by El Salvador at 52 and Guatemala with 48.
