An elite force of a thousand Guatemalan soldiers has been deployed along Guatemala's border with Mexico to reduce the operational area of drug smuggling by land, rivers and even by air. The force is supported by tracked and armored vehicles, helicopters and other aircraft.

Mukasey announced that 175 individuals were arrested today and on September 16, 2008, on charges related to an international drug trafficking cartel in a coordinated enforcement action by hundreds of international, federal, state and local law enforcement officials throughout the United States and Italy.

Mexico - Independence Day celebration in public plaza marred by explosions - Eight Dead - over 100 Injured
El Universal (Mexico City) and most other major news sources
In Morelia, Michoacán, the Mexican independence day celebration in a public plaza was marred by explosions that left eight dead and over a hundred injured, according to a statement by Governor Leonel Godoy.  At present it is presumed that fragmentation grenades were tossed on the ground into celebrating crowds and the shrapnel shattered legs.

Diplomatic Security Investigation Results in 112 Suspects Charged with Federal Passport Fraud
The Investigation Resulted in the Seizure of $650,000 and the Recovery of 80 Fraudulently Issued United States Passports

The U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Diplomatic Security's San Francisco and Los Angeles Field Offices and the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Sacramento Field Office announced today the results of Operation Deathmatch, the largest ever investigation into the issuance of fraudulently obtained United States passports.
