Many local and state governments are cash strapped and working to trim down their budgets. How does the federal government help? It imposes on them an 800-page regulation forcing them to change all of their street signs!
The Federal Highway Administration (FHA) is behind this boondoggle and waste of taxpayer dollars. According to the FHA, street signs that are in all caps are hard to read.
Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood wants to reverse the FHA’s decree. According to LaHood, “I believe that this regulation makes no sense. … To set things right, the first step is to reopen public comment and give people a chance to weigh in.” (LaHood, as you’ll remember, is the "Big Brother" who thinks that cars should have cell phone jamming systems to keep people from talking on the phone while driving.)
Why not just cancel the FHA decree altogether? If the decree makes no sense, drop it and move on to more important things.
If this decree stands, the city of Milwaukee, for example, will be forced to spend $2 million to replace all of its signs – more than the entire budget for traffic control.
Who’s to benefit from this idiotic plan? Why, the American Traffic Safety Services Association and the 3M Company. Both of these organizations lobbied hard for the imposition of these new sign rules. The 3M Company makes the reflective material used on street signs and the traffic safety association makes the signs. How convenient for them.
How many local governments will have to raise taxes on their beleaguered citizens to pay for this foolish and unneeded plan?
This is the Obama Administration at work: Doing whatever it can to destroy our economy through regulatory overreach.
The American people swept out a lot of the liberal debris in Washington, D.C. earlier this month. In 2012, let’s work to finish our cleaning out of the Obamunists and their anti-Capitalist policies.
