Letters Sent to Hill Demand House Members Declare Position on Transgender Bill
This week, as a bill that would override the laws of 38 states and could result in transgendered teachers to teach elementary school children stealthily heads to a committee markup and House vote, Traditional Values Coalition Executive Director Andrea Lafferty sent letters to key Members demanding they declare their opposition to ENDA, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, or face the wrath of their constituents.
Members targeted included vulnerable Democrats Reps. Bright (AL-2), Boyd (FL-2), Visclosky (IN-1), Donnelly (IN-2), Ellsworth (IN-8), Hill (IN-9), Schauer (MI-7), Childers (MS-1), Pomeroy (ND), Driehaus (OH-1), Kaptur (OH-9), Kilroy (OH-15), Boccieri (OH-16), Dahlkemper (PA-3), Carney (PA-10), Kanjorski (PA-11), Spratt (SC-5), Nye (VA-2), Perriello (VA-5), Boucher (VA-9), and prior Republican supporters or current co-sponsors including Reps. Diaz-Balart (FL-25), Biggert (IL-13), Tiberi (OH-12), Gerlach (PA-6), Dent (PA-15) and Platts (PA-19).
Excerpts from one of the letters include the following:
"It has come to my attention that you support putting transgender teachers in the classroom. If this is untrue, I would appreciate an opportunity to meet so you can clarify your position before any vote on H.R. 3017, the so-called Employment Non-Discrimination Act known as ENDA."
"This seemingly-benign legislation will override current "anti-discrimination" laws of 38 states, including your own, by making "gender identity" a protected status in hiring practices. These new federal regulations will, among other things, prevent local schools, religious organizations and businesses from making hiring decisions."
"Will you protect the children in your Congressional district or will you allow the federal government to override your state's current anti-discrimination law and force schools to hire, and make it illegal to reassign, these teachers? Your constituents have a right to know your position on this contentious issue-- before the vote."
