House Calls For Ethics Investigation Of Democratic Leaders

GOP Leader: "the American people have every right to expect that their members of congress are held to the highest ethical standards"

House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH)

Yesterday, the House sent a strong public signal - with an overwhelming bipartisan vote - that an investigation of what House Democratic leaders and members of their respective staffs knew about the allegations against former Rep. Eric Massa, and what actions they took after learning of those allegations, is necessary.  These questions must be answered to begin repairing the broken bonds of trust between the Congress and the American people.  House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) addressed the issue this morning on MSNBC's The Daily Rundown:

"[W]hat we're trying to do here is to get to the bottom of what happened.  And who knew what and when and what did they do about it?  The American people have every right to expect that their Members of Congress are held to the highest ethical standards.  And I think that what's happened here over the last couple of years continues to break down the trust that needs to exist between the American people and their Congress.  And only by getting to the bottom of some of these ethical issues are we ever going to start the process of restoring those bonds of trust that need to exist for our government to work as well as it should.  There are a lot of questions here.  And I think that it's time for the Ethics Committee to get to the bottom of the questions.  And that's Why I'm glad that the House overwhelmingly approved this resolution yesterday, urging the Ethics Committee to take this issue up."

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) promised the most "open and ethical Congress in history, but the following headlines make a mockery of that promise:

  • "GOP Pushes Probe of Disgraced Upstate Pol Eric Massa, Charges Nancy Pelosi Ignored Tip," New York Daily News, March 12, 2010
  • "Republicans are Urging New Investigation of Former Congressman Massa," The Washington Post, March 12, 2010

  • "Nancy Pelosi's Office Was Told of Concerns About Eric Massa," The Washington Post, March 11, 2010
  • "House Orders Further Probe of Massa Timeline," Gannett, March 11, 2010

  • "Boehner: Reopen Massa investigation," USA Today, March 11, 2010

The American people have every right to expect that their Members of Congress are held to the highest ethical standards.  The House's overwhelming vote yesterday confirms that Members on both sides of the aisle expect the Ethics Committee to commence an investigation into this matter is necessary.
