FenceAndDrugWar100609Ignoring the Obvious - Conference on the U.S.-Mexico Drug War "Delusional"

In another demonstration of the Alice-in-Wonderland nature of the U.S.-Mexico border problem, a recent conference held to analyze and debate the 40-year war on drugs asked why violence "has reached such an extreme."

"In one session, presenters cited government crackdowns, generational shifts within the narco hierarchy, growing Mexican domestic drug consumption, US-based arms trafficking, institutional corruption on both sides of the border, and the failure of political, social and economic structures." (Mexidata.info - Oct. 5, 2009)

Critics say the people at the conference missed the 800-lb guerilla in the room. "The Mexican drug war was triggered by the construction of the new fencing and vehicle barriers," said Glenn Spencer of American Border Patrol, "But the people at this conference, including academics, are so delusional that they refuse to face the facts."

Spencer said the same sort of delusion has taken over many in Washington, D.C., including DHS Secretary Napolitano.

"The American people understand that if we finish the fence we will finish the cartels," Spencer said. "Next fall they will let politicians know of their displeasure if they don't wake up and stop drugs at the border by completing the fence project," he added. Spencer says putting an end to cartels will go a long way toward solving Mexico's problems.

What a cla*sic logical fallacy.

By this logic, a rooster has the power to make a sun rise because the rooster crows just before the sun rises.
(hint: the fence has nothing to do with the cartels fighting)

and really? stopping the flow of drugs with a fence? really?

They will find ways around it. No matter how you try to stop drugs, they always find a way around it.

This is beyond stupid. This is what prohibitionists who make money off of prohibition think, not the majority of people. I do not want to fund your pointless fence with my tax dollars. It will not affect drug trafficking in the slightest.

I am surprised how uninformed you are on this issue. You are linking two events that are not directly related. Miles of fence compared to the number of homicides? Come one, you should try to be more scholarly. Based on your statistical analysis it would suggest that chlorinated water caues sunburns. When in reality, people just happen to get sunburns when they go swimming because they are wearing less clothes, instead of it being a problem with the chemicals in the pool. In other words, it is an example of faulty cause-and-effect. Just like your "analysis." One more thing - you write "800-lb guerilla in the room." Is it really a guerilla? Are you sure about that? How about a gorilla? Does that make more sense? Yes, it does. Oh, and it would be spelled guerrilla anyway (that's two "r").

The American people understand that if we finish the fence we will finish the cartels," Spencer said.

Wait a minute I'm American and I don't understand. How is spending billions more on fences and more military arms going to solve a g.d. thing. We as taxpayers are actually sick and tired of funding your failed policies. You should be ashamed of the civil war you have created in Mexico. Their blood is on your hands. Please oh wise ones tell us just ONE positive thing that your prohibition and inane war on drugs has accomplished. And could I get that one on one of your fancy graphs. Please.... Last I checked the death count for those ignorant peons is 15,000. BTW isn't that more than Iraq and Afghanastan put together? Yeh, if we can just put up one more fence everything will be just peachy. Keep drinking the Kool-aid.

Peace on the home front
written by Bill Harris, October 07, 2009
One need not travel to China to find indigenous cultures lacking human rights or to Cuba for political prisoners. America leads the world in percentile behind bars, thanks to ongoing persecution of hippies, radicals, and non-whites under prosecution of the war on drugs. If we’re all about spreading liberty abroad, then why mix the message at home? Peace on the home front would enhance global credibility.

The drug czar’s Rx for prison fodder costs dearly, as life is flushed down expensive tubes. My shaman’s second opinion is that psychoactive plants are God’s gift. Behold, it’s all good. Canadian Marc Emery sold seeds that enable American farmers to outcompete cartels with superior local herb. He’s being extradited to prison, for doing what government can’t do, reduce U.S. demand for Mexican.

Only on the authority of a clause about interstate commerce does the CSA (Controlled Substances Act of 1970) reincarnate Al Capone, endanger homeland security, and throw good money after bad. Administration fiscal policy burns tax dollars to root out the number-one cash crop in the land, instead of taxing sales. America rejected the plague of prohibition, but it mutated. Apparently, SWAT teams don’t need no stinking amendment. Father, forgive those who make it their business to know not what they do.

Nixon pa*sed the CSA on the a*surance that the Schafer Commission would justify criminalizing his enemies, but it didn’t. No amendments can a*sure due process under an anti-science law without due process itself. Psychology hailed the breakthrough potential of LSD, until the CSA shut down research and pronounced that marijuana has no medical use, period. Drug juries don’t seat abolitionists.

The RFRA (Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993) allows Native American Church members to eat peyote, which functions like LSD. Americans shouldn’t need a specific church membership or an act of Congress to obtain their birthright freedom of religion. John Doe’s free exercise of religious liberty may include entheogen sacraments for mediation of communion with his maker.

Freedom of speech presupposes freedom of thought. The Constitution doesn’t enumerate any governmental power to embargo diverse states of mind. How and when did government usurp this power to coerce conformity? The Mayflower sailed to escape coerced conformity. Legislators who would limit cognitive liberty lack jurisdiction.

Common-law must hold that adults are the legal owners of their own bodies. The Founding Fathers undersigned that the right to the pursuit of happiness is inalienable. Socrates said to know your self. Mortal lawmakers should not presume to thwart the intelligent design that molecular keys unlock spiritual doors. Persons who appreciate their own free choice of path in life should tolerate seekers’ self-exploration.
