Ex-president of Mexico foresees slow economic recovery in Latin America
Ex-president of Mexico (1994 - 2000) Ernesto Zedillo, speaking before an international meeting in Buenos Aires, Argentina, predicted that the economic recovery of Latin American countries will likely be slow. "The gap between the rich and poor countries will increase. We have in store for us an economy of slow growth and scarce capital," he said. Zedillo, a Doctor of Economics, said, "We face the worst worldwide recession since the second World War," greatly influenced by links to the US economy. The ex-president also referred to the "bad ideas" emerging from "populist democracies" in response to the global crisis, adding that "mature democracies" must rely on "good ideas and responsible government."

Colombian narco-airfield discovered
A Colombian military operation located a clandestine airfield used by narcotraffickers in the Caribbean department [state] of La Guajira near the Venezuelan border. The airstrip was discovered hidden in the forest near the tourist town of Maicao. Troops found two airplanes, one ready to be loaded, radio equipment and chemicals for cocaine manufacture.

Sinaloa September count: 138
September became the most violent month of the year in the state of Sinaloa with 138 homicides. The total for the year, 816, however, falls behind last year's count of 823 for the same period. The names of the September victims were listed along with their method of death. All but six were by gunshot, three by beating, two by stabbing and one by asphyxiation.

Three police officers gunned down
Two men were arrested in Tijuana today in relation to the triple homicide of municipal police officers yesterday afternoon. The three officers were ambushed by an armed group in at least two vehicles.
