Guatemala's President & U.S. immigration

While visiting in the U.S. to attend the U.N. General Assembly, Guatemala's President, Alvaro Colom, used his "Presidential Dispatch" radio program to focus on the problems resulting from immigration and deportation of Guatemalans from abroad. He acknowledged that the immigration reform proposed in the United States is one of the solutions and that Guatemala is working with Mexico and the Central American countries in order to deal with this issue in a united fashion. Colom also plans to meet with immigrant groups while in the United States.

Prostitution in Guatemala

Saira Ortega is the coordinator of the Integral Health Assoc., a U.N. joint program regarding AIDS. She estimates that there are 35 thousand female prostitutes in the country, eight thousand of them in the capital city alone. Two thousand minors are believed to be included in the total and are regarded as the victims of people trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation.

Multiple victims in Guerrero

The bodies of five women were found on a beach access dirt road near Petatlan, state of Guerrero. Four of the bodies were piled up one on top of another, while the fifth was inside a vehicle at the same locale. All had been shot with assault rifles.

"Zetas" detained

A confrontation ensued after soldiers responded to an anonymous report about armed men at a house in Coatzocoalcos, Veracruz. When it was over, eleven "Zetas" were detained and a twelfth one was killed. The thugs had 17 "long barrel" firearms, six handguns, 25 fragmentation grenades, 5 chemical grenades, and 11 vests plus 6 vehicles, four of which were armored. [Coatzocoalcos is on the north end of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, a heavily used route for the traffic of illegal aliens and drugs.)

Around the state of Chihuahua

In Casas Grande, Chihuahua, heavily armed men went into the newsroom of the "Radio Vision" digital news website and executed Norberto Miranda, a journalist who wrote about crime and security issues.

Elsewhere, on the Ciudad Juarez to Chihuahua City highway, three human heads were found abandoned inside ice chests.

Yesterday's report included an item about how the number of homicides and extortions are overwhelming the capacity of the government of El Salvador to deal with them. The cartoon below depicts two men, one the country's Attorney General, and the other, the head of the National Police, being assailed by those two factors.
