WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Office of House Republican Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA) today launched a new video news release entitled, "Number One Priority." The video highlights Speaker Pelosi's top priority, "cap and trade" legislation that will impose a national energy tax of up to $3,100 on all Americans and slam small businesses with higher energy bills, causing the loss of millions of jobs.
In a year that has seen the loss of 2.9 million jobs in America, Republicans remain focused on creating jobs, cutting spending to reduce the deficit, and keeping taxes low.

Representative John Dingell (D-MI): "Cap-And-Trade Is A Tax And It's A Great Big One." DINGELL: "Nobody, nobody in this country realizes that cap-and-trade is a tax and it's a great big one. I want to get a bill that works. How do we choose the best course, cap-and-trade, carbon tax? At times, my dear friend, Albert, you have been an advocate of a carbon tax as the better way to go. How do we address this problem?" (U.S. House of Representatives Energy And Commerce Committee, Hearing, 4/24/09)

Rep. Charles Melancon (D-LA): "I Believe This Bill Would Create An Undue Burden On Families Who Are Already Paying Too Much In Energy Bills..." "At this point Melancon said he can't support the draft because it would shut down the state's energy coast. Melancon's vote could have a detrimental effect on getting the measure out of committee. 'I believe this bill would create an undue burden on families who are already paying too much in energy bills and on an industry that provides thousands of Louisianians with good jobs,' Melancon said." Rep. Mike Ross (D-AR): "If You Don't Like $4-A-Gallon Gasoline, You're Really Not Going To Like Your Electric Bill Sometime Between Now And 2030." "Rep. Mike Ross, Arkansas Democrat and one of the moderate members whom party leaders will have to persuade in order to secure passage, said he was concerned about the price consumers would have to pay if utilities passed along the cost of buying carbon permits to customers. 'If you don't like $4-a-gallon gasoline, you're really not going to like your electric bill sometime between now and 2030,' he said." ANNCR: "Obama even says so." CHYRON: Obama even says so THEN-SENATOR OBAMA: "Under my plan of a cap and trade system, electricity rates would necessarily sky rocket."
Then-Senator Barack Obama: "Under My Plan Of A Cap And Trade System, Electricity Rates Would Necessarily Skyrocket." OBAMA: "You know, when I was asked earlier about the issue of coal, you know - under my plan of a cap and trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket. Even regardless of what I say about whether coal is good or bad. Because I'm capping greenhouse gases, coal power plants, you know, natural gas, you name it - whatever the plants were, whatever the industry was, they would have to retrofit their operations. That will cost money. They will pass that money on to consumers. You can already see what the arguments will be during the general election. People will say, 'Ah, Obama and Al Gore, these folks, they're going to destroy the economy, this is going to cost us eight trillion dollars,' or whatever their number is. If you can't persuade the American people that yes, there is going to be some increase in electricity rates on the front end, but that over the long term, because of combinations of more efficient energy usage, and changing lightbulbs and more efficient appliances, but also technology improving how we can produce clean energy, that the economy would benefit."
