For those who argue that current immigration is nothing more than a continuation of our traditional admission of immigrants, the following will set the record straight. At no time in our history has there been an influx of illegal immigration like the country is experiencing today. The estimated 850,000 new illegal immigrant arrivals each year is about as large as the highest level of legal immigrant admissions in our history before the current mass immigration was unleashed by the 1965 Immigration Act, i.e., an average of 880,000 admissions per year from 1901-10. When illegal admissions are added to current legal admissions, today's immigration level jumps to about 1,750,000 per year.1

Those who suggest that the current influx of Mexicans is simply a repetition of other surges in our history such as from the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany or Italy should look at the facts. Mexican entries each year are running at about half a million per year (about 220,000 legal admissions and about 380,000 illegal entrants).2 A comparison of  that wave of Mexican entries to the largest historical surges from European countries shows how the present influx is unlike any before it.

Ireland's record decade for immigrants to the United States was 1841-50, the period of the ‘potato famine' crisis, when the annual average was about 78,000 persons. The top of the scale for entries from the United Kingdom was from 1881-90 when annual admissions averaged less than 81,000 persons. That decade was also the peak entry for Germans, who came at an annual rate of about 105,000 persons. For Italy the country with the highest immigration in our history prior to the current wave of mass immigration the top decade for immigrants was during the "great wave" 1901-10 period when average Italian entries were less than 205,000 per year.

--------------------------------

[1] Historical immigrant admissions data are taken from the Statistical Yearbook of Immigration Statistics. The annual average admissions 1991-00 were over 900,000 to which is added the estimated annual influx of illegal immigrants during that period of 850,000 per year (which does not account for the reductions in the illegal alien population that come from deaths, voluntary departures, conversion to legal status and deportations).
[2] The 2002 Yearbook of Immigration Statistics, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, October 2003 notes that the estimated population of Mexicans illegally in the United States increased from about 2 million in 1990 to 4.8 million in 2000, i.e., an annual average increase during that time of 280,000 persons. This was a net increase, and represents an annual average influx of about 380,000 and emigration (deportation plus voluntary return) of about 100,000 persons (see: Bashir Ahmed and J. Gregory Robinson, "Estimates of Emigration of the Foreign-Born Population: 1980-1990, Population Division Working Paper No. 9, U.S. Bureau of the Census, December 1994). That estimate puts Mexican return migration at slightly over 200,000 per year, and half of that amount may be assumed to be among the illegal immigrant population.

Illegal Aliens
written by DelawareBob, May 25, 2009
There is no doubt that this immigration has become a serious problem here, and our Federal Government is doing NOTHING about the problem. Give AMNENSTY to the ILLEGAL ALIENS, just issue more VISAS, and continue on with the legal immigration.

I believe we should put a temporary halt on the legal immigration and cut way back on the VISAS. As for the illegal immigration and the ILLEGAL ALIENS, they should be told to leave this Country and return to their own country. EVERY business and social service should be using e-verify.

Talk about comprehensive reform, let's first stop this birthright citizenship. How about a very stiff fine for entering this Country ILLEGALLY of about $5,000 or 5 years in jail. Overstaying a VISA, $5,000 fine, or five years in jail.

Let's start with that and see where we are at. Every State at this point should be helping to get the ILLEGAL ALIENS. This illegal immigration MUST stop! It's time for ZERO TOLERENCE with these ILLEGAL ALIENS. With all the American we have out of work now, our Country is broke according to obama, and we can no longer afford to school these ILLEGAL ALIEN children and give them free medical care, free public housing like obama's aunt, free food stamps and everything else. Yes, it's time for these ILLEGAL AIENS to get out of this Country and back to their own country where they belong. Once we get rid of the ILLEGAL ALIENS, we will get rid of all the problems that go with them. THAT IS A FACT!

Millions returned home in the "olden days"
written by Wanda G-Berger, May 25, 2009
The analysis is even more stunning when one considers the huge number of immigrants who returned to their home countries during the First Great Wave of the early 20th Century. Absent welfare and social benefits millions of those early immigrants returned home. Not so today where subsidized housing, emergency medical care, free schooling, etc. cushion the poverty a*sociated with newcomers.

Becoming Mexico........
written by rssg, May 26, 2009
I'm afraid it's too late. Mainstream liberal and conservatives and media will not debate the real issue, instead talk in cliches' and in pander to the Latino lobby.

And now with "Wonderboy" in the White House, we will see even less immigration enforcement and an erasing of any remaining border. Like Hussein Obama said last year - "just make sure you child can speak Spanish".

Soon the battle will commence

To zero in on the paramount issue of ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION, the American Public must do several things. 1. Vote out all anti-sovereignty, pro-illegal immigration, pro-open border, free trader politicians. You'll find the answers at NUMBERSUSA. 2. The ominous magnet is the parasite businesses--large and small- taking away the livelihood of non-skilled, or poorly skilled regular working cla*s Americans. E-verify is the answer? Although it has intentionally been weakened by Sen. Reid, Speaker Pelosi, Sen. Feinstein and others Democrats in the main stream. If you haven't noticed each party has continuously undermined any serious law, to stop the millions of illegal aliens and families squatting here.

The 1986 Simpson/Mazzoli bill has never been enforced, so the free movement of illegal labor has never been extinguished. The millions of foreign labor in this country is of epidemic size and you the taxpayer are paying for everything, to subsidize their living here. With all the government handouts they have access to with large families, the chances are they are making more money than you. It now has infiltrated blue and white collar jobs over three decades. Only a in-perpetuity E-Verify with serious punishment for employers, will stop the never ending river of foreign labor. If American workers do NOT address this travesty, nothing will ever be achieved. Sitting on ones hands does--NOTHING? Find more answers at JUDICIAL WATCH, CAPSWEB OR UNIPAC. Offer your support to Rep.Shuler (D-NC) on his gov website. Phone: 828-252-1651 and Senator Sessions (R-AL) (256) 533-0979

The statistics of illegal immigration has rised. People have a choice in their mind" if they dont let me be here I would be here illegally". Thats a problem because government dont want to do anything about it. But we have a "benefit" from them they will work at those jobs that others dont want to do it.
