According to unofficial information, Colombian authorities seized 300 kilos of explosives last weekend in Neiva, a city where the guerilla rebel organization FARC planned an attack against President Alvaro Uribe. The president plans to visit the city in southwest Colombia next Friday.

Anti-drug agents in Colombia confiscated more than 830 kilos of cocaine in an alkaloid production laboratory in a rural zone near the Venezuelan border. The lab was dismantled by the agents along with a large amount of raw material for the manufacture of cocaine. There were no arrests.

The Colombian Navy, in a joint operation with the Department of Security (DAS) seized 190 kilos of cocaine from a fishing boat in the Caribbean. The operation took place in the bay of Cispate in the department [state] of Sucre. The crew of the boat managed to escape to the beach.

A heavily armed group ambushed a police unit, killing three near Los Ciruelos, Michoacán, in the Tierra Caliente area. Five uniformed officers were on vehicle patrol when a group of armed masked men in several vehicles blocked their way and some 15 men got out and began shooting at close range. The police vehicle received some 100 impacts, killing the three officers and gravely wounding the other two.

In the tourist cities of Acapulco and Zihuantenejo, Guerero state, narco-banners have appeared and in Zihuantenejo, two people were found executed inside a car. The banners, two in each city, complained that it wasn't fair that the government's fight against organized crime also affects the criminals' innocent family members.

La Voz de la Frontera (Mexicali, Baja California) 5/11/09
The Mexican Army and state police seized 20 kilos of cocaine and other drugs from an Estrella Blanca passenger bus arriving in Mexicali from Culiacan, Sinaloa. After a lengthy interrogation of all the passengers, four were arrested in connection with the drug. Two of them were the driver and his assistant. The cocaine was in 20 packages inside a backpack in the driver's locker on the bus. Also found in the restroom of the bus was 1.5 kilos of high-grade methamphetamine.

Jalisco state police in Villa Guerrero arrested six individuals in possession of firearms, grenades and drugs. The police observed several people in three vehicles acting suspiciously and stopped them for a routine inspection, during which they observed the weapons and arrested them. Their armament consisted of 11 AK-47 assault rifles, three sub-machine guns, three pistols, three fragmentation grenades and one gas grenade, a mortar shell and two protective vests. The three vehicles were also seized along with a small amount of drugs and 9,400 pesos. One of the seized vehicles, a 2002 model, had California license plates 17JXT5 (sic).

Norte (Cd. Juarez, Chihuahua) 5/11/09
Six soldiers were wounded by gunshots yesterday afternoon in Cd. Juarez, but authorities have not yet released any details. Norte has only been able to learn that at least four soldiers were admitted to several unidentified hospitals. The spokesman for Joint Operation Chihuahua would not give further information.
