Mexico Takes Issue With U.S. Assertion That Mexico Is A "Failed State"

Responding to the recent report from the US Department of Defense asserting that Mexico is a country in danger of collapse, Mexico's Secretary of Foreign Relations, as well as other federal officials, refuted the assertion.  They cite US Ambassador Antonio Garza's disqualification of the assessment when he denied that Mexico can be categorized as a "failed state." 

They say that anyone living in Mexico would see the reality of that.  Mexican officials responded by placing responsibilities on the US to address its own drug traffic and consumption as well as arms traffic into Mexico.

For the second time in several days, the Mexican Army has delivered blows to organized crime in the state of Michoacan by dismantling a meth lab in the city of Cotija.  Over the past weekend, the Army also discovered and destroyed another lab in Apatzingan and seized 250 kilos of "crystal," valued at over 1.5 million dollars.

Six bodies piled on top of one another, all showing signs of torture and executed by gunshots, were found on a rural road in the municipality of General Trias, Chihuahua.  [near Chihuahua city]  All were males between the estimated ages of 16 to 20 years.

Two more police officers were executed by gunfire in Cd. Juarez this morning.  No further details.

An ice chest left in front of the Mayor's office in Cd. Juarez this morning was found to contain three human heads.  No further details.

In the first 15 days of 2009, the Mexican Army arrested 269 presumed narcotraffickers, destroyed 28 clandestine airfields and seized more than 36 metric tons of marihuana.
