DREAM Over: Illegal Alien Student Amnesty Awakens to Fiscal Reality Print E-mail

Even as the illegal alien advocacy lobby is frantically trying to spin the election of Barack Obama as a mandate for a sweeping amnesty, they have all but conceded that the economic crisis and worsening unemployment have probably doomed their efforts. They've set their sights on the more modest goals of achieving amnesty for segments of the illegal alien population and using those to leverage further concessions down the road.

Advocates for illegal aliens believe that the Development Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act offers them their best hope to enact a mini-amnesty. The DREAM Act would confer amnesty on most illegal alien youths and just about anyone who could vaguely be described as a student, and guarantee them subsidized in-state tuition rates in their states of residence on the premise that as children, they are not responsible for being in the country illegally. It would also result in a de facto amnesty for many parents, and entitle these kids to sponsor other relatives in the future.

Just as suddenly as passage of the DREAM Act seemed to be within the grasp of the illegal alien amnesty lobby, it appears to be slipping away. America's higher education system especially public universities and colleges is facing a crisis.

The nation's economic woes have hit state budgets hard, as revenues have fallen and demands on services and benefits have increased. Nearly every state has increased tuition rates and cut programs, and it's still not enough. "We have put the education system on a starvation diet, and each and every year it becomes weaker," said California's Lt. Governor John Garemendi. University of California Chancellor Charles Reed has publicly discussed exercising his authority to cut enrollment.

At precisely the time when California's higher education system is "on a starvation diet" and enrollment may be slashed, demand for seats is at an all-time high. For a growing number of families an education at a private university is simply unaffordable, making a seat at a state-run school all the more coveted.

California's crisis is also a crisis for those pushing the DREAM Act. The state that is starving its higher education system and reducing enrollment already has its own version of the DREAM Act. For the past six years, illegal aliens have been able to fill seats at public universities and colleges at taxpayer subsidized in-state tuition rates. (A state court of appeals has ruled the policy unconstitutional, but California has yet to repeal it.)

Passage of the federal DREAM Act would put every starving, malnourished, or merely hungry state higher education system in the same predicament as California's. While public university budgets, programs, and seats fall victim to state budget crises, the DREAM Act would compel all states to provide seats and tuition breaks to newly-amnestied illegal aliens.

Backing the DREAM Act would be a body blow to the interests of the people who actually did elect Barack Obama: America's embattled middle class. Few issues personally concern as many Americans as whether their children will be able to get the college educations they need, and how they will pay for it. Those voters are not likely to be pleased by a bill that takes educational opportunities and resources away from their own kids and turns them over to the children of illegal aliens.

A wrongheaded idea even under the best economic circumstances, amnesty for illegal aliens in one all encompassing bill, or piecemeal would be a disastrous misstep for the fledgling Obama administration. An idea that was flatly rejected by the American public during a period of relative prosperity and low unemployment makes even less sense in a bad economy and governments at just about every level facing record shortfalls and deficits.

Because of the economic and fiscal realities that he will soon inherit, President Obama will be compelled to make decisions that are painful to a broad swath of the electorate. If the pain is dispensed equitably the public is likely to be understanding and forgiving. If hard-working, law-abiding Americans are asked to sacrifice while people who broke our laws are rewarded and political pressure groups are paid off, the reaction will quite different especially if it hurts their own kids.

Illegal education
written by RichieRich, December 28, 2008
My son is in his 2nd year of college which costs me annually about $35,000.00. The liberals in this country find it seemingly more wise and valuable to give illegal immigrants free education then it's own citizens.

Whether good times or bad my question is why?. States with these huge types of entitlement programs are all in fiscal trouble for the same reasons many Americans are, poor financial management.

Who in a right mind would give individuals a free education that don't even belong in the country?. This is nothing short of insanity and or ploy for votes. Out of this estimated 47 million without health care, 22 million are illegal immigrants.

Of course most of the people for these huge entitlement programs don't pay for them hence, have no vested interest in right and wrong. They often don't pay any taxes and don't see their wallets or P&L's shrinking as a result of.

The war on the middle-cla*s is a war they started and the enemy themselves. They vote these lunatics into office and don't think twice about suffering from the very people they elect. Apparently illegal immigrant's having a free educational ride over their own children makes perfect sense to middle-cla*s Americans.

I'll believe it when I see it over but for now, I'm glad. Why? Am I a mean-spirited, anti-immigrant bigot?

I am if you consider someone who thinks illegal aliens should be deported; that the law should mean something and violators should be punished, whether immigration law or any other type of law.

But wanting the rule of law to mean something, wanting our borders and our American culture, traditions, customs AND ENGLISH LANGUAGE to mean something, doesn't make one a bigot.

It makes one a mature, common-sensed adult. It's the politicians who refuse to enforce the law because they are PAID OFF BY ETHNIC LOBBIES AND BUSINESS LOBBIES who want a never ending chain of poor immigrants to come to this country, either legally or illegally, in order to keep wages down and thus increase their own profits. Profit is good, I'm in favor of it but only within the rule of law. We have laws for reasons.

The chronically corrupt government of Mexico will not stop until half of it's population is in our country. The only way to stop the "Mexodus" is to show we mean to enforce our own laws, our borders and our sovereignty as a nation.

Richie:

I don't think it's liberals that are the problem. A large number of liberals support the enforcement of the immigration laws.

Instead, it is the open-borders coalition of far left and far (Neocon) right that is responsible for our immigration problems.

Although they only represent small fringes on both sides of the political spectrum among the general public, they control virtually the entire establishment media, including Fox News.

Fortunately, the establishment media is dying, from its own incompetence and bias.

Increasingly, the people, not the Ruling Cla*s, determine immigration policy. Sadly, that is not yet the case in California, and that state will most likely be dead before the people realize that they have been electing people to office that have destroyed their state and its future.

AB 540 the legislation which gave illegal alien students in-state tuition rates at taxpayer expense in 2002, MUST be repealed by the CA state legislature or Gov Arnold. It has cost the state a minimum of 130$ million per year in lost tuition fees. The time when La Raza advocacy groups having their way to the detriment of everyone else must end NOW!. End in state tuition for illegals, oppose the state Dream Act and oppose ANY fedseral legislation related to a so-called Dream Act(AMNESTY).

We need the SAVE ACT and E-verify used for every business and to be sure illegals stay out of the market and American can get any Job they want or need.

E-verify does not discriminate against RACE, Religion, SEX or physically capability only your Citizenship and your LEGAL right to be and work in United States.

If we can stop Predatory business owners from hiring then the Illegal Aliens will not Stay and return to their native Countries.

This ISSUE is not about RACE, but ALL Governments Federal/State/LOCAL not doing their jobs, because big and small business owners want cheap workers and no labor laws to bother with.

Its called GREED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Both Liberals and Conservatives need to take some pride in our Country and protect it from all invading nations citizens and corporate greed. Please, NO IMMIGRANT BASHING or HATE Crimes.

HATE only feeds the single RACE agenda groups for Open Borders and the Liberal Media

Nobody thought Hitler was a problem either then 72 million dead later, whoops. What do you consider a large number?, anything over 1?. I'm sure the Waffen SS had a few non-believers also.

You sound a little like Barack Obama, Jr. He attended a racist church for 20 years and oddly enough he's not a racist. Guilty by a*sociation may not have any legal validity but it sure does in the court of public opinion.

Let me see if I understand you correctly.

- Your for boy's wearing dresses to school.
- Your for a million abortions every year.
- your for taxpayer funded abortion.
- Your for Winter break over Christmas.
- Your for spring break over Easter break
- Your for the removal of God in the Pledge.
- Your for sex education in Kindergarten.
- Your for gay books in the cla*sroom.
- Your for income redistribution through taxation.
- Your for outlawing the death penalty.
- your for condoms and birth control pills in schools.
- Your for high priced unskilled labor.
- Your for large government social programs.
- Your for everyone owning a home even if they can't afford it.

but many liberals draw the line at free education for illegal immigrants. Yes, I'm sure of it. Makes perfect sense.
