On Wednesday 11/19/2008, the International Atomic Energy Agency - IAEA published it's first report of its findings in Syria, saying "significant" traces of uranium were found in the Syrian site bombed by Israel on 09/06/2007 (see - SMOKING-GUN).

The Syrian site bombed by Israel (Bathna-Bombing) had features resembling those of a nuclear reactor site, the UN nuclear watchdog says in a report. But, in a virtual acrobatic phraseology, the International Atomic Energy Agency did not exclude the possibility the site was being used for purposes unrelated to nuclear activity.

"While it cannot be excluded that the building in question was intended for non-nuclear use, the features of the building, along with the connectivity of the site to adequate pumping capacity of cooling water, are similar to what may be found in connection with a reactor site," said the IAEA report, sent to its 35-nation board of governors ahead of next week's meeting.

IAEA inspectors visited the bombed al-Kibar site in June, where they took samples that appear to have contained the radioactive material, but Damascus has blocked any follow-up trips. Syria claims that the uranium found there was residue from the Israeli missiles used in the air-raid. But a senior official close to the IAEA said the type of uranium found was not usually found in munitions.

The agency's investigation had been made more difficult by the fact that Syria has erected a new building on the bombed out site. The IAEA also noted that Syria had not produced requested documentation to support its declarations about the nature of the building.

The US has said the target of Israel's raid was a secret nuclear reactor built with North Korean help that was nearing completion.

Although the 8 nations, which already have a nuclear military capacity, are very cautious and responsible in handling their nuclear technology, some of its leaked to irresponsible hands. After the disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1989 and the economic crisis their nuclear materials where obtained by the Russian Mafia. Russian nuclear experts hired their services to countries like Iran, North Korea, Pakistan, Syria and Libya and where very damaging in proliferation of nuclear technology.

In the late 90s' the ‘Father' of the Pakistani nuclear bomb project, Dr Abdul-Kadir Khan, soled nuclear technology and knowledge to the most dangerous regimes of North Korea, Iran, Syria and Libya. Pakistan itself is still, through its notorious intelligence apparatus - ISI, sponsoring terror in India and in some degree also in Afghanistan and was the breading ground for Al Qaeda and the Taliban in previous years.

Libya gave up, few years ago, its nuclear ambitions in return for better relations with the Western Democracies and economical development. Iran and Syria are very active in sponsoring terror all over the Middle East and backing Islamic organizations such as Hizbullah in Lebanon, Hamas in the Palestinian Authority and the "Mahdi Army" in Iraq.

Nuclear capacity in countries like Iran and Syria will, at the very least, provide safe haven and nuclear backup to the terror activity sponsored by those countries. Eventually the risk that Islamic militants in Pakistan, and in the future in Iran and Syria will obtain nuclear capacity is not an imaginary scenario but a very disturbing Reality.   * Related topics - IRANIAN CAPACITY ; Summer 2004 Alert ;
