COLUMBIA, SC - Military analyst, author, columnist, and former U.S. Marine infantryman W. Thomas Smith Jr. has been commissioned a major in the South Carolina State Guard.

In ceremonies today, Smith was administered the oath of office by retired U.S. Navy SEAL Lt. Michael Thornton (recipient of the Medal of Honor). Following the commissioning, a luncheon in Maj. Smith's honor was held at the Capital City Club, attended by Thornton, Brig. Gen. and Mrs. Eugene F. Rogers, Maj. Gen. Nelson Lacy, Maj. Gen. and Mrs. Eli Wishart, family and friends.

As a field-grade officer, Smith will serve as both information officer and aide-de-camp to Brig. Gen. Rogers.

As a military analyst, Smith specializes in issues of international terrorism and national defense: His work appearing in Human Events, Townhall.com, The New York Post, USA Today, U.S. News & World Report, BusinessWeek, and many others.

A former U.S. Marine rifle-squad leader, parachutist, and counterterrorism instructor; Smith has been a consultant for films airing on The Military Channel, and he directs the Counterterrorism Research Center for FamilySecurityMatters.org.

Smith is a veteran war correspondent; having covered conflict in Iraq (two tours), Lebanon, the Balkans, Israel and the West Bank.

An internationally recognized expert on Hezbollah, Smith's "expertise and analysis in the field of international terrorism is invaluable for anyone attempting to grasp the complex strategic-military dynamics of the Middle East," according to LebanonWire.com. He has provided analysis to both the U.S. Special Operations Command and the U.S. Central Command, and he has edited briefs for U.S. Congressional hearings.

Among his responsibilities, Maj. Smith is working with the executive committee for the Medal of Honor Society Convention (to be held in Charleston, S.C., 2010), sponsored by the S.C. State Guard Foundation and the Citadel.
