American Patrol Report-- September 2
The photo in the El Paso Times showed a priest reaching through an old chain-link fence at Sunland Park, New Mexico, shaking the hand of someone in Mexico. This is part of a fence that a French news service said was a "new model for border security."

As we reported last month, most of the fence at Sunland Park is old chain-link and can easily be climbed. DHS did some improvements at either end, but left the weakest part untouched.

According to the El Paso Times story, by the end of the year the U.S. government will complete a 100-mile-long fence between from Columbus, New Mexico to Fort Hancock, Texas. Yet, according to a survey by American Border Patrol,
work on the fence between Columbus and Sunland Park was halted in April.

"One need only look at these two examples to understand that the government is not serious about building a real fence on the U.S./Mexico border," said Glenn Spencer of American Border Patrol. Spencer said when he flew along the border on April 4 crews were hard at work on
a new fence just east of Columbus, but when he returned on July 16 they were gone

Spencer also noted that the chain link portion of the fence nearer El Paso should have been replaced when the fence was extended, but it was not. "All along the border we have seen numerous examples of game playing by the Department of Homeland Security to give the public the impression that it is serious about protecting our nation, when in fact it is not." Spencer added.

According to ABP's most recent border survey, DHS had completed only eight miles of new fence between April and August. "And now we are supposed to believe that they will complete 300 miles in a little over 3 months – I don't think so." Spencer said. Spencer said the Bush Administration wants to leave the impression that something is being done on the border to get past the November election. "They don't want illegal immigration or the border to be on the minds of the American public," he said.

Spencer said he is working to complete the final version of a video, "Border Truth USA" that will be released in late September, following another aerial survey by ABP. "If the blackout of American Border Patrol by the mainstream media continues, it is likely that few will ever see it, or understand what is really happening on the border," Spencer added.
